One thing you’ll love about using a platform with free hosting, like Tumblr or Blogger, is the freedom to get started with little to no technical effort. This is how I started.
But it doesn’t take long to discover the limitations of these platforms, including the inability to customize the design or expand the function beyond the designated wall of the platform. On top of it, you don’t own any of your work when you use a free-hosting platform.
This simply doesn’t work well for creative bloggers — a group of people in need of more control in order to bring their vision to life, — so I’d like point out 14 cool reasons why you should use Dreamhost and WordPress to bring your blogging to the next level.
1. Only $2.95 / month
Of all the cool reasons to use Dreamhost, cost is usually one that matters most to beginning bloggers. For the small equivalent of $2.95 / month, you can get a hosting package from one of the most recommended hosting providers online.
This offer saves you 70%.
BlueHost comes close to beating Dreamhost with a special rate of $4.95 / month … but that’s still double what Dreamhost asks for and you have to pay $59.40 upfront.
HostGator is even worse … $3.96 / month sounds like it comes close to beating Dreamhost, but the fine print reveals otherwise. You have to pay for 36 months upfront, which comes to $142.56 … and that doesn’t even include a domain.
2. Free domain
A domain usually costs around $9.95 / year to register, depending on the extension (.com, .org, etc.), so grabbing one for free is a nice little way to save money when you’re starting out. Picking up free domains isn’t exactly remarkable, however, as most hosting providers will offer to throw one in if you sign up for their service, but because Dreamhost offers this in addition to the samll $2.95 / month rate, it stands out as extremely attractive to beginning bloggers.
3. WordPress 1-Click Install
The WordPress 1-Click Install is one of the reasons why I decided to go with Dreamhost. As a new blogger, this feature will save you time and headache as you get started.
4. Automatic Updates
Dreamhost will automatically update WordPress for you if you’d like. It’s important to keep your WordPress software up to date with the latest release, as the team behind it are constantly improving the code and strengthening its security. Keep it updates and you’re likely to see less spam in your comments sections.
You can also update your WordPress software from within the admin section, but if you’re like me you may not always be paying attention to the latest updates so having an auto-updater is helpful.
I didn’t know I would need a virtual private server for one of my projects when I first signed up (multi-site installs of WordPress require it), I was able to upgrade effortlessly thanks to Dreamhost.
6. Unlimited domains
This is another point where Dreamhost beats other hosting providers, including HostGator. Unlike many hosting providers, Dreamhost gives you the option to host unlimited domains, which gives you the freedom to develop and manage multiple projects with one hosting package.
7. Unlimited email
If you’re hosting multiple projects, then you’re probably interested in creating multiple email addresses. Fortunately with Dreamhost, you can create as many as you want.
8. Unlimited space
The last thing you want to experience when creating a website, especially if you’re uploading large images, video or audio to your portfolio, is limited space. Having unlimited space frees you to upload your entire life.
9. Two Week Free Trial
You get two weeks to try out the Dreamhost service — amazing! If you’re not happy, simply let them know and you’ll only be charged for domains you’ve purchased.
10. Live Support
One of the greatest things about Dreamhost is the support. If you have a question, at any time, you can use the live chat feature to connect with someone at Dreamhost and receive expert support. Their support team is patient, understanding and quick to point you to helpful material when your question goes beyond their expertise (hardly ever!)
